Renovation grants in Wallonia in 2026: the complete guide

Transitional scheme, income categories R1 to R4, mandatory audit: how Wallonia's renovation grants work in 2026 and how to claim them before the deadline.

Wallonia is in the middle of a transition on its renovation support. In 2026, a transitional scheme applies, and the calendar matters as much as the amounts: applications remain possible until 30 September 2026. Here is how the system works, who qualifies and how to build a file that holds up.

How it works

The Walloon principle is simple: the lower your household income, the higher the grant. For applications submitted in 2026, four income categories apply:

Category Household income
R1 up to €28,900
R2 up to €41,100
R3 up to €54,300
R4 up to €122,800

Your category determines the level of support applied to the base amounts. The exact definition of the income taken into account, and the nuances linked to household composition, are on the official Walloon portal: check your situation before filing, as conditions change.

Two conditions structure the whole scheme:

  • A prior audit for the energy grants. The PAE2 audit, carried out by an approved auditor, maps the state of the home, ranks the works and conditions access to the energy grants.
  • Works done by the book. Use a BCE-registered contractor and keep detailed invoices: the administration must be able to link each invoice to an eligible item.

Eligible works

Without going into the amounts, which depend on your category, the main families of supported works are:

  • Insulation: roof, walls, floors.
  • Joinery: replacement of window frames and glazing.
  • Systems: heat pump, ventilation, efficient heating.
  • Roofing and habitability: certain roofing, damp-proofing or safety works.

The precise list of items, with the technical requirements to meet, is published on the official Walloon portal. Read those requirements before signing a quote: a poorly chosen material or an insufficient performance level can void the grant.

Amounts and ceilings

The amounts per item depend on your income category and the type of works. They are published on the official Walloon portal and we deliberately do not reproduce them here: they can be adjusted during the year, and an outdated figure is an expensive one.

Three reliable anchors to frame your budget:

  • The PAE2 audit generally costs €500 to €1,200 excl VAT. A €450 grant covers part of it.
  • A typical project combining insulation, heat pump, ventilation and new window frames represents a budget of €35,000 to €65,000 excl VAT.
  • The amount left to pay after grants sits, for that type of project, between €15,000 and €45,000 depending on your income category.

On top of that comes the reduced VAT: 6% instead of 21% for a private home over 10 years old renovated by a registered contractor. The detail is in our article on the 6% VAT rate in Belgium.

The step-by-step procedure

  1. Have the PAE2 audit carried out by an approved auditor. Its report ranks the works and serves as the reference for the whole file.
  2. Request several quotes from BCE-registered contractors and compare them item by item.
  3. Carry out the works following the order and technical requirements of the audit.
  4. Submit your application with the invoices, by 30 September 2026 at the latest under the transitional scheme.
  5. Track your file: payment follows validation by the administration.

Before each step, check the precise arrangements (forms, supporting documents, deadlines) on the official Walloon portal: they evolve.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Starting the works before the audit. For the energy grants, the PAE2 audit must precede the works it recommends. When in doubt, sign nothing before the auditor's visit.
  • Letting the calendar slip. The transitional scheme accepts applications until 30 September 2026. A rushed file submitted at the last minute risks rejection over a missing document.
  • Vague invoices. "Renovation works" as a description is not enough: demand detailed invoices, item by item, with the materials and their performance.
  • Guessing your income category. Household composition affects the calculation: check your category on the official portal rather than estimating it.
  • Forgetting to combine with the 6% VAT. Regional grants and the reduced rate are two separate mechanisms that stack on most renovation projects.

FAQ

Until when can you apply for a grant in Wallonia?

The transitional scheme accepts applications until 30 September 2026. For what comes next, keep an eye on the official Walloon portal: the arrangements evolve.

Is the energy audit mandatory?

Yes, for the energy grants: the PAE2 audit is the entry point of the scheme. Expect €500 to €1,200 excl VAT, partly covered by a €450 grant.

Can grants be combined with the 6% VAT rate?

Yes. The reduced VAT applies to private homes over 10 years old renovated by a registered contractor, independently of the regional grants. Both advantages stack on the final bill.
